"Badd, Garth, Reba Snare Music Awards"

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Oklahoma City's Color Me Badd took the award for best rhythm and blues single at the American Music Awards on Monday, and country cousins Garth Brooks and Reba McEntire won their usual honors as well.

Color Me Badd, made up of [Northwest] Classen High School classmates, won for "I Wanna Sex You Up." At six each, the group tied C & C Music Factory for most nominations in their field.

McEntire, a native of Stringtown, OK, was named best country female vocalist. She thanked her family in Oklahoma, Texas and Tennessee.

Brooks, a Yukon country superstar, won three trophies, but couldn't claim them because his pregnant wife became ill. He won top country single for "The Thunder Rolls," favorite country album for "No Fences" and favorite male country artist. Sandy Brooks, 26, took ill Sunday on a flight from Nashville, Tenn., said Scott Stem, a spokesman for the singer's management company. Brooks canceled a performance at the ceremony. His manager, Pam Lewis, said Sandy Brooks was "doing fine."

Sandy Brooks was taken to Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital in Inglewood after arriving at Los Angeles International Airport. She was treated and released Sunday, said hospital spokeswoman Mary Ellen Brown. Brown said she had no details of Sandy Brooks' illness. Stem said Sandy Brooks was resting Monday at an undisclosed location. Once doctors feel her condition has stabilized, she and her husband will return to Nashville on a tour bus, Stem said.

C & C Music Factory won trophies for favorite dance music single for "Gonna Make You Sweat," favorite dance artist and new dance artist, best pop-rock group and favorite new pop-rock artist.

"Unforgettable," Natalie Cole's tribute to the music of her father, Nat King Cole, was named favorite adult contemporary album. Cole also won favorite adult contemporary artist. In the favorite female artist category, Paula Abdul won for pop-rock and Mariah Carey for soul-rhythm and blues.

Michael Bolton won favorite male pop-rock artist and his "Time, Love and Tenderness" was the top album in that category. Bryan Adams won favorite pop-rock single for "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You. " Luther Vandross captured the male artist trophy, and his "Power of Love" record took the album honors in the soul-R&B division.

Hammer, host of the presentation, collected his eighth trophy as favorite rap artist. Naughty By Nature was favorite new rap artist. D.J. Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince won the rap album honor for "Homebase. "

The perennial favorite country group Alabama won its 15th American Music Award for best band, duo or group in that category.

Guns N' Roses beat Metallica and Van Halen for the favorite heavy metal-hard rock artist award. Van Halen's "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" was the top album.

The favorite soul-rhythm and blues band trophy went to Bell Biv Devoe.
